Joe Sloan, age 78, of Westminster, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009 in his home with his family by his side. Joe is survived by his wife Verna; 5 children, Barbara Jordan (Don) of Arvada, Carol Sloan of Denver, Bonnie Mauer (Roger) of Littleton, Brenda Walters (Bryant) of Centennial, and Joe Sloan (Rose O’Donnell) of Westminster; fifteen grandchildren, Melanie, Holly, and Mike Jordan, Dustin and Jenna Kardoes, Austin, Aidan, and Andrew Scheck, Kelci and Tessa Mauer, Elizabeth, Emily, and Erin Walters, Theresa and Jack O’Donnell Sloan; one great grandchild, Rylee Kardoes; three sisters, Mary Ellen Englert, Betty Bright, and Nora Ann Finley; and 2 brothers, Dave and Paul Sloan, along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen A. Sloan and Frances Spain; one brother Allen “Bud” Sloan; and two sisters Alice Zetlmaier, and Ruth “Sr. Alana” Sloan.

Joseph M. Sloan was born Dec. 18, 1930 in Holly, Colorado. Memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday Aug. 14th at Spirit of Christ Chapel at 80th and Wadsworth. Lunch at the church to follow. Family graveside service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery at a later date.

He graduated from Holy Family High School in 1948 and enlisted in the Navy two years later, serving during the Korean War on a destroyer ship for his 4 years of duty. He took advantage of the G.I. bill and began his college education. Along came Verna and babies- that did not stop him. He was working for Western Electric days and attending Regis University night school. This schedule lasted for 8 years until he graduated in 1964 with his Bachelors of Science. He retired when AT&T reorganized and he took advantage of an early out retiring at age 54. Later he worked for the IRS during tax season.

He was deeply loved and he will be greatly missed.

I teach with Bonnie and through the years we have shared our love of our families with each other and so my heart goes out to all of you as you say good-bye to your beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.     joe was my boss in the westernelectric days on east 40th ave. its been a long time, I think it was in the 80’s. I rember joe as quiet& and a fair boss. god bless you joe. Blain Neilson
