September 22, 2018 :: Centennial, Colorado
Maybelle Eleanor Krekeler, 99, of Centennial, Colorado, went home to be with the Lord
on Saturday, September 22, 2018.
Maybelle was born April 4, 1919, to Albert and Hilma (Hallstrom) Johnson in Brady,
Nebraska, where she grew up in a sod home on their family’s farm. She graduated from
Brady High School in 1936. She was passionate about doing hair and was accepted into
Marinello Beauty School in Chicago; she completed her training at North Platte Beauty
Academy. By 1940, she owned her first beauty shop in Gothenburg, Nebraska.
Her patriotism led her to enlist in the Navy Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency
Service (WAVES) in January 1944 in the Naval Hospital Corp. She received her training
at Hunters College in New York City, then the U.S. Navy Bethesda Hospital in
Washington D.C., completed her education at the Bainbridge Naval Hospital in
Maryland. She received her Pharmacist Mate Third Class (PHM 3/C) as a Dental
Technologist in August 1945 and served until her honorable discharge in December
She returned to manage her beauty shop where she met and married Wally Eggebrecht
in 1948 and they had a daughter, Ruth. After Wally’s death in 1953, she married Alfred
Krekeler and had twins: Mona and Mark. Maybelle moved to Colorado in the late 1960’s
where she continued to work in local beauty shops until she retired at the sweet age of
91. When she was 89, she started a new adventure being a full-time grandma when she moved
in with Micki and Ken Whatmore. She loved playing with the children, attending
Bible studies, baking, traveling, laughing, and reading with her great-grandchildren.
Maybelle loved life, loved her family, loved her vocation, and loved the Lord. She always
had a kind word to say and a smile on her face. She was a strong, determined woman
who would find joy in everything.
Her legacy and memories will be cherished by her three children: Ruth Thorsen (Steve
Kopasz), Mona Tara (David), and Mark Krekeler; three grandchildren: Mark Thorsen
(Chrissy), Micheline “Micki” Whatmore (Kenneth), and Matthew Thorsen (Alisha);
eleven great-grandchildren: Adam, Lukas, and Michael Thorsen; Nathaniel, Meghan,
Logan, Ethan, Caedan, and Morgan Whatmore; Matthew and Noah Thorsen; her three
brothers: Stanley, Arnold, and George Johnson; her beloved sister, Ilene Blattner. She
has been blessed by abundant nephews, nieces, and cousins in her life. She is preceded
in death by her parents Albert and Hilma (Hallstrom) Johnson and siblings: Helen
Trusty, Louise Davis, Amy Johnson, Violet Williams, and Alice Liljestrand.
The following is an excerpt from one of her many manuscripts of her life “So I have three
wonderful grandchildren and 8 (almost 9) great-grandchildren. I am very fortunate
that they all live close by so I can see them often. They are all such a pleasure to be
around! That’s been my life. So thankful for good health and that I can keep on
working in a profession that I have been very happy with. I have met many lovely ladies
through the years. Our family – my parents, sisters, and brothers have been the
greatest pleasure in my lifetime. I am so thankful for all the family and happy to share
these thoughts and events of a long life. May it continue for a long time.”
Maybelle’s celebration of life will be held at her granddaughter’s home on Oct. 4, 2018,
10:00 am – 12:30 pm, then concluding with a military committal service at Fort Logan
National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
