“Ed” passed away at home in Black Forest, surrounded by his loving family, after battling esophageal cancer at age 58.
He was born in Ft. Benning, GA to Selvin E. and Florence L. (Woodbury) Shields who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan, three children: Holly Scott (husband Mike), Selvin E. Shields III (wife Brittany), and Jennifer Shields (husband Patrick) all residing in the area. Also surviving him are two sisters, Peggy Schibik of Evansville, IN and La Claire Shields of El Paso, TX as well as five grandchildren: Michael, Morgan, Cody, Christian and Ryan.
He grew up an Army brat, living in many places in the United States. After winning the draft lottery (#1) he entered ROTC at Central Michigan University, graduating in 1973. He then began his Army career with the Infantry, later switching to Ordinance. “Ed” proudly served in the United States Army for twenty years, retiring in 1993 to Colorado Springs. He then became a Contractor at Ft. Carson, after which he spent 15 years as Comptroller.
He loved watching the Washington Redskins, the Colorado Rockies, gardening, fishing with his son and grandchildren, and making home brewed beer.
